SOUTHERN COLORADO & NORTHERN NEW MEXICO WINTER 2013 T VOLUME 24 , ISSUE 1 Career Planning for Young Teens he second annual Girls in the Middle conference is scheduled for Friday, April 19, 2013 at Trinidad State Junior College. Last year, approximately 80 girls attended from Las Animas and Huerfano Counties. The conference encourages girls in 6th, 7th and 8th grades to continue studying and consider careers in the math, science, engineering and technology fields. This year's conference begins with a keynote speaker, followed by two morning breakout sessions where the girls will explore various career occupations. In the afternoon, the girls will enjoy a workshop offered to the entire group. These hands-on activities allow young ladies to experience and develop a better understanding of career choices in such fields as chiropractic care, dentistry, engineering, geology, hydrology, medical science, solar engineering, veterinary science, wildlife management and aquaculture. Last year's participants shared these comments about the conference: "It was epic!" "This experience has made me think more. I would like to attend Girls in the Middle again." "I met new people and learned about different subjects." "Exciting and the most fun I've had for awhile." Of the girls in attendance, 52% said they were considering taking more math and science classes in high school, 63% learned about new careers at the conference, and 92% plan on attending college. The conference is organized by a volunteer staff of women from the business community and Trinidad State Junior College. Thanks to generous donations from area businesses and organizations, this program is scheduled to impact the lives of middle school girls, but additional help is always needed. If you'd like to donate monetarily or in-kind to support the conference or provide drawing prizes for the participants, please call 719-846-5622 or visit www.trinidadstate. edu/cte-events. Donations need to be in by March 1, 2013. Girls interested in attending can register online beginning March 4 at www.trinidad state.edu/cte-events.
